A rich history defines the City of Portsmouth. Founded in 1752, Portsmouth is steeped heavily in military history. The city is located on the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, which is one of the oldest and largest shipyards in the United States. This shipyard has been home to some of the most important landmark events in the city’s past. The city also features an array of historic districts, many of which were home to some of the greatest colonial pioneers.
